Priority disciplines for PhD recruitment

CML recruits each year 15-20 PhD students, the Faculty of Sciences over 150. About half of them are research assistant PhDs on projects recruited via an open, competitive procedure, and half of them do their PhD supported by scholarships of e.g. Indonesian, Chinese, Columbian and Mexican government. While we can give information on other possibilities in Leiden, during the meetings in Bogotá and Mexico DF priority will be given to interviews with students that fit with CML or LDE CfS.

CML: subjects in the fields of Industrial Ecology and Environmental biology

  • Industrial Ecology: analyzing the global metabolism of material flows, product flows, and impacts along product and material life cycles with methods such as Life cycle assessment, Material flow analysis and Environmental Input Output analysis
  • Environmental biology: assessing the impact of human production processes on natural capital and biodiversity, with methods such as toxic risk assessment, environmental DNA tests, field analysis, modelling of ecological processes, remote sensing.

LDE-CfS: sustainable design, sustainable business models, transition governance, with a particular focus on cities, industrial production, and the horticulture sector

PhDs at Leiden University

Leiden is a historic, vibrant student town of about 150.000 people just 20 minutes by train from Schiphol Amsterdam airport, close to the beach, and close to the world-famous tulip fields. The total number of PhD students in Leiden is over 2500, close to 50% international.   • Leiden University was founded in 1575 as the first university of the Netherlands, being one of the oldest in Europe. Leiden has faculties in Social sciences, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Humanities, Medical Sciences, Archeology, and Natural sciences.
  • The Leiden Faculty of Sciences consists of the following institutes: Leiden Observatory, Leiden Institute of Physics (LION), Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC), Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR), Mathematical Institute (MI), Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) an CML.
  • The Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) has a focus on two research areas. One is assessing the global metabolism of material flows, product flows, and impacts along product and material life cycles with methods such as Life cycle assessment, Material flow analysis and Environmental Input Output analysis. Another is assessing the impact of human production processes on natural capital and biodiversity, with methods such as toxic risk assessment, environmental DNA assessment, field analysis, modelling of ecological processes, remote sensing, etc.
  • CML is part of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability (LDE CfS) that combines the research of many research groups on sustainable technology and design at TU Delft, sustainable business and economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and governance/transition management at all three universities.
